
The Prime Minister believes that the issue will be resolved, as he explained to Trump that the ownership of the new bridge should be jointly held between the American state of Michigan and the Canadian government.
The construction of the bridge, named after the famous Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, began in 2018 and was funded by the Canadian government in the amount of $4.7 billion. Its opening is expected to take place in the coming months.
Previously, Donald Trump threatened to block the new route until the U.S. received "full compensation for everything" it has ever provided to Canada. At the same time, the New York Times reports that American businessman Matt Moroun, representing the family that owns the competing Ambassador Bridge, met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick shortly before Trump's statement.
