According to information published by The New York Times, The Washington Post plans to lay off about 30% of its staff, which includes both journalists and commercial department employees. Currently, around 800 journalists work in the newsroom.

During a conversation with the editorial team, the newspaper's editor-in-chief, Matt Murray, noted that the publication "has been losing significant amounts of money for a long time and has not met the demands of its readers." As a result, the focus will shift to national news, politics, business, and healthcare, while other topics will be covered to a lesser extent.

Murray added, "Today we are dedicating ourselves to taking a more prominent place in people's lives, considering the growing competition and the complexity of the media landscape."

He also stated that the international department will be significantly reduced, and the sports department will be completely closed, although some of its staff will be transferred to other sections. The book section will also be closed, as well as the daily news podcast Post Reports.

As reported by National Public Radio, the layoffs began on February 4 at the direction of the newspaper's owner, billionaire Jeff Bezos. The layoffs affect nearly all editorial divisions. Murray noted that the newspaper has not kept pace with the changes of the times, and transformations have been necessary for a long time, given the "complex and even frustrating reality."
