In Kazakhstan, the decision to deport a 16-year-old Russian who disagrees with the war in Ukraine has been canceled

Timur Turkov, who left Russia from the Komi Republic, crossed the border into Kazakhstan hitchhiking and on foot on September 12. According to him, he walked about 17 kilometers to the border village of Astafyevo, after which he sought help from the border guards. The teenager's grandmother was present at the court hearing. She expressed concerns that returning to Russia could threaten Timur's life.
After crossing the border, the teenager was taken to the border post "Makhambet" and then transferred to Uralsk, where he was placed in a center for minors. He was later accused of illegal border crossing.
In December, the court ruled to deport Turkov from Kazakhstan and imposed a five-year ban on his entry into the country, as well as a six-month restriction on his freedom. However, Timur and his lawyer filed an appeal, and the prosecutor's office supported the motion to cancel the deportation.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Marianna Katzarova, sent a letter to the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, urging him not to deport the underage Russian who left the country due to his disagreement with the war in Ukraine and the militarization of society.
