Iceberg A23a has lost its status as the largest in the world, losing 67 percent of its area
Iceberg A23a, which is drifting in the Southern Ocean, has lost its status as the largest in the world after a significant reduction in its area by 67 percent. This was reported by the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
According to the information, over the past three months, the size of A23a has decreased by 22 percent, allowing iceberg D15A to take the top spot. The area of D15A is 3,071 square kilometers, which is more than double the current size of A23a. Iceberg D15A broke off from the Filchner Ice Shelf in January 2016 and is currently located on the shoals off the coast of Princess Elizabeth Land in eastern Antarctica.

Iceberg A23a was formed in 1986, having broken off from the Filchner Ice Shelf, and its original area was 4,170 square kilometers.
