Every two minutes, one woman dies from cervical cancer worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO experts assert that this disease can be completely eradicated if 90% of girls are vaccinated, 70% of women undergo regular screening, and most patients receive the necessary treatment.

According to the organization, cervical cancer is most commonly found in women who lack access to medical services, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The highest rates of incidence and mortality are observed in countries in Southern Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia.

Women infected with HIV are six times more likely to develop cervical cancer.
WHO emphasizes that early diagnosis of the disease is extremely important. Symptoms to watch for include abnormal bleeding between periods, after sexual intercourse, or in postmenopause, heavy vaginal discharge, pelvic, back, or leg pain, as well as weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and swelling of the legs.

Women experiencing these symptoms are strongly advised to see a doctor immediately.

With timely diagnosis, cervical cancer is considered one of the most treatable types of cancer.

Recent data shows that cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in Kyrgyzstan. The main risk factor is the human papillomavirus. Since 2022, the republic has included the HPV vaccine in the National Immunization Schedule.

Vaccination targets girls aged 11. January has been declared Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
