The head of the National Oncology Center, Nurbek Bukuev, emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups during a broadcast on "Birinchi Radio," recommending that this be done at least once a year.

He reported that there are 35,000 registered oncology patients at the National Center, with 6,300 to 6,500 new cases diagnosed each year.

According to him, 65-70% of those seeking help are at advanced stages of cancer, and among them, half die within a year. "This is a problem for the entire society; our mentality often prevents people from undergoing examinations and preventive procedures in a timely manner. Cancer does not arise suddenly: there are always preceding symptoms or other diseases that require diagnosis," Bukuev noted.

However, he added that it cannot be claimed that the number of patients is increasing: according to statistics, in 2008 there were 86 patients per 100,000 population, while in 2024, it is expected to be between 84 and 87 cases. The reason for this is the growth of the population.

A year ago, Bukuev reported the need for more than 2 billion soms to provide chemotherapy for 90-95% of patients. This year, that amount has risen to 4.5 billion, but the necessary budget has not been allocated. Therefore, an application has been prepared for the purchase of the most essential medications for the next year.

He also spoke about the development of a five-year strategy that includes the implementation of screening programs, updating equipment, replacing outdated X-ray machines, increasing the number of endoscopes and laparoscopes, as well as acquiring a cyclotron and conducting PET scans.

“Although the PET scan machine is located at the National Oncology Center, there is a lack of the necessary medication to perform the procedure. Funds for the equipment have been allocated, but the tender process takes time,” Bukuev noted.

According to him, the center is expected to receive two new mammography machines soon, thanks to cooperation with deputy Talaybek Masabirov. “These machines will help in detecting breast cancer in women. We currently have only one mammograph, which cannot accommodate all those who wish to be examined,” he added.

The specialist emphasized that regular medical check-ups should be conducted at least once a year, preferably twice.

“Women should undergo tests, have cytological examinations, and colposcopy. Additionally, to maintain health, it is important to engage in sports, swim, walk a lot, and eat properly,” concluded the head of the National Oncology Center.
