The largest cholera outbreak in 25 years has been recorded in Congo: children are more frequently affected
Since the beginning of this year, over 64,000 cases of cholera have been registered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the highest number of cases being among children. This is reported by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
In 2025, Congo recorded 64,427 cases of the disease, of which 1,888 resulted in death. Among the sick are 14,818 children, of whom 340 did not survive.

The epidemic has spread to 17 out of 26 provinces in the country, with one of the most concerning hotspots located in the capital – Kinshasa.

UNICEF emphasizes that cholera is a preventable disease. To combat this infection, it is essential to increase government investments in areas such as improving water supply, sanitation, and medical services in vulnerable regions.

Cholera is transmitted through contaminated water and food containing cholera vibrios. Therefore, it is crucial to implement preventive measures to protect the population, especially children living in areas where cases have already been reported.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, 1.4 million people die due to a lack of clean water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions, and billions of people do not have access to safe toilets.
