According to Nuradin Kanataev, who heads the information and technical support department of the pharmaceutical and medical devices department, Kyrgyzstan is significantly dependent on the import of medications. Currently, 97% of all medicines come from abroad, while local producers meet only 3% of market needs. He reported this on the air of "Birinchi Radio".
Every year, medications worth about 30 billion soms are imported into the country. Forecasts suggest that this figure will increase: in 2023 it amounted to 30 billion, in 2024 it is expected to rise to 32 billion, and in 2025 to 34 billion soms. Nuradin Kanataev noted that such growth is related to the implementation of a traceability system, which helps reduce the volume of smuggling.
According to 2022 statistics, which are still relevant today, the share of smuggled medicines accounts for about 30-40% of the total volume.

Previously, there was no effective tool in the country to determine whether a medication was smuggled or legally imported. With the introduction of the traceability system and as a result of the digitization of the department, it became possible to clearly track the origin of the packaging. Currently, the system operates partially, as medicines costing less than 100 soms are not yet subject to traceability; however, work is ongoing to expand the system. In the near future, it is planned to include these medications as well, which will provide a complete picture of the situation in the market.
