At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, the mayor of the capital, Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, noted that this winter season, the level of smog has decreased, and citizens should thank the city hall for this.

“For the first time this season, the city has been in the 'green city' category several times based on daily indicators, which indicates a lower amount of smog than before. The city authorities have done significant work to identify the causes of pollution and eliminate them. We can observe that there is less smog. The city hall is using various methods to clean the air, for which we should express our gratitude. We need to learn to acknowledge positive changes. Although the problem is not completely resolved, the level of smog has still decreased,” said the speaker.

But how are things really?

Measuring devices did indeed record days when the pollution level was low, indicating that at certain moments the air was almost clean. However, overall, the air in Bishkek is still considered harmful in winter.

Since November, the capital has repeatedly made it onto lists of cities with the most polluted air. Even before the heating season began, when coal was actively used, air quality was assessed as hazardous to health. In December and January, Bishkek repeatedly topped the anti-rankings for smog.

Thus, the rare "green" days can be explained more by changes in weather than by sustainable measures from the city hall.

Interestingly, on January 22, during the speaker's address, sensors in real-time showed the level of pollution.
