January 2026 set a record for the number of magnetic storms, becoming the most active month since 2017. The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reports that the first month of the new year recorded the maximum number of days with magnetic storms since the beginning of the 25th solar cycle.

According to the data, there were 10 magnetic storms in January out of 31 days, which is the highest figure since September 2017. The beginning of 2026 already confirms the assumptions that it may become the most geomagnetically active year in the last ten years.

As expected, the main source of magnetic storms in January was coronal holes. However, the strongest storm of the month was considered to be the one that occurred from January 19 to 21. It was caused by the impact of a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun as a result of an X1.9 class flare that took place on January 18.

As of now, only one magnetic storm has been recorded at the beginning of February.
