UN: Every fourth Kyrgyz citizen lives below the poverty line

More than 41% of the country's population cannot afford a full diet

A new report from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) states that approximately 26% of Kyrgyz citizens live below the poverty line.

According to this organization, more than 41% of people in the country cannot provide themselves with adequate nutrition. At the same time, about 75% of Kyrgyz citizens are forced to either borrow money or cut expenses, including healthcare costs. Additionally, 21% of children under five years old suffer from anemia.

The most severe situation is observed in the Batken region, where the poverty rate exceeds 40%.

The difficulties of the situation are exacerbated by climate risks, dependence on remittances from migrants, low levels of agricultural development, as well as rising prices for food and fuel.
