The official confirmation of the 2025 decree banning the entry of citizens from 19 countries was made by the administration of Donald Trump. This decision heightens the political tension surrounding the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off in a few months.

The ban affects citizens from the following countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and North Korea.

Although exceptions are made for players, coaches, and a limited number of officials, many fans, journalists, and members of extended delegations are almost entirely deprived of the chance to obtain visas.

Haiti and Iran - in a special position

Both countries, which qualified for the 2026 World Cup, will be under special pressure. Fans from Haiti, who dreamed of seeing their team return to the global tournament, may not make it to the matches in the USA.

Iranians also face a high risk of visa refusals, creating additional diplomatic tension between the countries.

Problems for teams

Technical and medical staff, including doctors, analysts, and physiotherapists, are also at risk. Federations will have to address how the absence of some key personnel will affect teams' preparations for the games in the USA.

Actions by FIFA

The football federation is trying to find compromise solutions. Discussions are underway about:

expanding the category of exceptions for team specialists; relocating part of the logistics and headquarters operations to Canada or Mexico; negotiating temporary relaxations in visa policy.

So far, none of the proposals have been approved by the American side.

As the World Cup approaches, pressure on the organizers is increasing. The question of maintaining the principles of sporting openness amid strict political restrictions remains open.
