FIFA to consider Nigeria's appeal regarding the 2026 World Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has filed an appeal with FIFA, contesting the results of the playoff match against the Democratic Republic of Congo, which took place as part of the qualification for the 2026 World Cup. A final verdict is expected to be issued before the start of the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

The main reason for Nigeria's appeal is the participation of several players with dual citizenship in the DR Congo team. If FIFA confirms the violations, this could lead to a review of the results of the decisive match, in which Nigeria lost in a penalty shootout 3:4.

Recall that in November, Nigeria suffered a defeat to the DR Congo in a tense final of the African playoff, which allowed the Congolese team to continue their fight in the intercontinental qualification stage. In this stage, the "Leopards" will face the winner of the match between New Caledonia and Jamaica.

If FIFA makes a positive decision, it will allow Nigeria to re-enter the race for a World Cup spot and effectively open the way for the "Super Eagles" to participate in the intercontinental playoffs.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico and will be the first tournament featuring 48 teams.
