The Argentine national team, which is the reigning world champion, may face serious consequences and lose the opportunity to participate in the 2026 World Cup. This is related to a major corruption case being investigated within the Argentine Football Association (AFA), which could lead to sanctions from FIFA.

According to the Argentine publication La Nacion, law enforcement conducted searches this week, during which AFA President Claudio Tapia, his deputy Luciano Nakis, and assistant Pablo Tovijino were detained. All of them are suspected of illegal enrichment.

The investigation is focused on an elite estate in the Pilar area, covering about 100,000 square meters. The property includes a helicopter pad, a horse farm, and a collection of over 50 vintage cars. According to the investigation, this property is formally owned by a retiree who is likely a front for the AFA leadership.

Additionally, the case involves financial schemes involving First Division clubs and the owner of a financial company, Ariel Vallejo. The investigation claims that through Tapia, his company imposed loans with inflated interest rates on the clubs, exploiting their dependence on the federation.

The Argentine national team risks facing serious consequences in the event of a negative reaction from FIFA. The International Football Federation strictly adheres to the principle of autonomy of national associations and prohibits government interference in their activities. If the actions of the Argentine authorities are deemed a violation of this principle, the AFA could be suspended.

If this happens, Lionel Scaloni's team will automatically lose the right to participate in international tournaments, including the 2026 World Cup. Argentina has already been placed in Group J, where it is set to play against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan; however, its title defense may now be at risk.

Previously, FIFA imposed sanctions on Kuwait, Indonesia, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, whose teams were suspended from international competitions due to government interference in the work of football federations.

The situation surrounding the AFA continues to develop, and a potential decision from FIFA could significantly impact not only Argentine football but also the entire 2026 World Cup.
