A sensation at the Winter Olympics: a figure skater from Kazakhstan won gold
At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidurov surprised everyone by winning gold in the men's singles event. This achievement marks the first in Kazakhstan's history in figure skating.

The competitions are taking place in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, and Shaidurov, who became the tournament's favorite, unexpectedly took first place. This is only the second gold medal for Kazakhstan in the entire history of the Winter Olympics.

Mikhail became the first figure skater in history to execute a triple axel — quadruple toe loop cascade at such competitions.

With a total of 291.58 points, consisting of 92.94 points for the short program and 198.64 points for the free skate, Shaidurov was in fifth place after the short program, trailing behind his competitors. The silver medal was won by Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama with a score of 280.06 points, while his compatriot Shun Sato took bronze with 274.9 points.

21-year-old Mikhail Shaidurov is the silver medalist of the 2025 World Championships and the winner of the Four Continents Championships in the same year. He is coached by 1994 Olympic champion Alexey Urmanov.

Previously, the only medal in figure skating for Kazakhstan was the bronze won by Denis Ten at the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
