The main theme of the ceremony was titled "Armonia," which translates to "Harmony."
After the parade of athletes representing different countries, a welcoming speech was delivered by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry. The Olympic flame was lit simultaneously in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
