Veteran Kyrgyz Footballer Georgy Shevchenko Has Passed Away

The Kyrgyz Football Union announces the death of Georgy Shevchenko, a Master of Sports of the USSR and a renowned veteran of Kyrgyz football, who passed away at the age of 85.

Georgy Shevchenko will forever be remembered as one of the key players of the legendary team "Alga" during its peak. He began his career with "Alga" in 1965 after being invited from "Dnepr" by coach Nikolai Samarin, and continued to play until 1971, when the club was at the height of its popularity.

As a defender, Georgy stood out for his strategic thinking, ability to anticipate the development of the opponent's attacks several steps ahead, as well as his tough and precise actions in ball recovery. His teammates nicknamed him "Richard Sorge" for the composure and wisdom he displayed on the field. His confident actions often became the key to the team's success.

In his very first match for "Alga," Georgy won the sympathy of the fans and the respect of his teammates. In that game, the team triumphed over "Pahtakor" with a score of 4:1, and Shevchenko also scored a goal.

The 1967 season was special for the club. "Alga" showcased spectacular and attacking football, falling just a few points short of promotion to the top league. As a result of this season, Georgy and his teammates were awarded the title of Masters of Sports of the USSR.

In 1971, Georgy Alekseevich ended his career in professional football but did not leave the sport. He took up coaching, working with young footballers born in 1958 and proving himself to be a talented educator. The successes of his protégés were not long in coming: within two years, his team secured third place in the USSR championship among older youth in Kyiv, surpassing well-known rivals such as CSKA, "Dynamo" (Kyiv), "Karpaty," and "Zarya."

Even after retiring from professional football, Georgy Alekseevich continued to actively participate in the sport. Until the age of 70, he played for the veterans' team of Kyrgyzstan, representing the country in matches in Almaty and Moscow, stepping onto the field each time with his characteristic confidence and nobility.
