This week, a meeting of the CSTO countries will take place in Bishkek
The summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is scheduled for November 27 in Bishkek. The main topics to be discussed at this significant annual event concern both regional and international security, according to the CSTO secretariat. Political scientist Arkady Gladilov commented on the possibility of new topics for discussion against the backdrop of growing interest from the European Union, the USA, and Turkey in Central Asia, in an interview with Vesti.kg.
“In our lives, there is always room for surprises. However, I do not expect that at the CSTO meeting, any of the participants will put forward radical demands or proposals. Most likely, the agenda will include the issue of the final stage of the conflict in Ukraine, which is relevant for Russia and also touches on the interests of Central Asia in terms of both security and economy,” noted Gladilov.
Nevertheless, the countries of Central Asia are gradually moving away from formal handshakes and declarations of friendship.
“Much of what will be discussed at the CSTO meeting in Bishkek will remain out of the public and media spotlight. Topics that are usually considered in a narrow circle may only become known later. At the moment, the focus in Kyrgyzstan is on the elections to the Jogorku Kenesh, which will take place soon. Judging by recent events, Central Asian countries today are paying more attention to regional issues. This is evident from the recent meetings of ministers, heads of governments, and presidents. The outcomes of the presidential meetings in Washington and Tashkent confirm this. However, overall, it is not expected that the discussion of traditional CSTO topics will bring any surprises,” he added.
