TREATY OF FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THE MANAPS AND BIYS OF THE KYRGYZ AND THE SULTANS AND BIYS OF THE ELDER AND MIDDLE JUZ OF THE KAZAKHS, AMONG THE SIGNATORIES OF WHICH WAS JANTAY ATEKIN (KARABEK UULU)


Fortress Kopal August 22, 1847

a) "On the 22nd day of August 1847. We, the undersigned biys of the Kyrgyz people, sent by the trust of our people to the border chief of the Siberian Kyrgyz, Major General Vishnevsky, have made this agreement as follows:

1. We commit to live in friendship and peace with the people of the Great and Middle Orda of the Kyrgyz as subjects of the Great Russian Sovereign, not to commit robbery, pillaging, or murder. Any minor disputes arising between us shall be resolved mutually according to our steppe laws.

2. We shall not make any oppression against caravans and traders passing through our pastures, but rather provide them with protection and assistance as much as possible.

We commit to uphold this agreement faithfully and shall not violate it, and in case of the slightest non-fulfillment, we subject ourselves to the responsibility of God's wrath.

b) "On the 22nd day of August 1847. We, the undersigned sultans and biys of the Great Orda in the presence of Mr. Border Chief of the Siberian Kyrgyz, Major General Vishnevsky, have concluded the following agreement with the manaps and honorable people of the Kyrgyz people:

1. We commit to live in friendship and peace with the Kyrgyz people, not to commit robbery, pillaging, or murder. Any different claims arising between us shall be resolved mutually according to our steppe laws.

2. If we violate our mutual peace through robbery, pillaging, or murder, we subject ourselves to God's wrath and punishment according to Russian laws.
