“Blind Spot” - One of the Causes of Deaths
Recently, a tragedy occurred in the parking lot of “Asia Mall” in Bishkek: a car fatally struck a three-year-old girl. The question arises: how could this situation have been prevented? To clarify the circumstances, the editorial team of Vesti.kg turned to infrastructure expert Marat Musuraliyev.
He noted that an important step is to create a clear separation between pedestrian and vehicle flows. “In underground parking lots, special flooring should be used, and in regular parking lots, such as at ‘Asia Mall’, there should be clearly marked parking zones with appropriate markings,” he added.
Musuraliyev also emphasized the importance of installing barriers to ensure the safety of small children. In his opinion, it is worth considering a legislative initiative requiring vehicles to be equipped with rear-view cameras. “In Japan, more than ten years ago, there was an attempt to implement traffic light regulation, but it did not take hold due to drivers ignoring the markings. Currently, there is a project called ‘Safe City’, which is part of a broader initiative called ‘Safe Country’,” the expert says.
He also expressed doubts that lawmakers would be willing to support such measures, although they could significantly improve the parking situation. The cost of installing a camera is about 2200 soms, and such devices could assist drivers when maneuvering in reverse.
It is important to note that paid parking is allowed in front of the “Asia Mall”, and cars from neighboring parking lots often pass through areas where pedestrians walk. Despite the presence of speed bumps, the dense movement of pedestrians and vehicles leads to a high likelihood of dangerous situations on the road.
