The conflict within Trump's team concerns the peace plan for Ukraine, as reported by BILD sources. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are key players in this standoff, trying to shape U.S. foreign policy and secure Trump's political legacy.
Vance was one of the first to support the project proposed by special representative Steve Whitcoff, while Rubio initially took a wait-and-see approach but then took the initiative in negotiations with Europe and Ukraine.
According to BILD sources, European diplomats view Rubio as a more predictable and pro-European politician, while Moscow is counting on Vance, a hardliner regarding Kyiv. Nevertheless, Rubio's position has significantly strengthened recently: after the summit in Alaska, he became the chief negotiator for the U.S. in Geneva.
“We see Rubio actively negotiating with Ukrainian and European partners in Geneva. This indicates that his influence is growing. Vance, on the other hand, is focused on one goal — to become president, believing that the MAGA movement will make him Trump's successor,” noted a former senior official in the Trump administration in a comment to BILD.
