The meeting lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes, exceeding the scheduled time in Trump's agenda. As of now, neither leader has made official statements following the conclusion of the negotiations.
According to information provided by CNN, this was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders in the past six years, and they exchanged positive remarks.
Trump noted that Xi Jinping is a "great leader of a great country" and expressed confidence that their relationship will be "fantastic for a long time." In turn, Xi emphasized that he was "pleased" to see Trump again after such a long time.
The Chinese leader also pointed out that "their views do not always align," which is normal for the two leading economies in the world, adding that they must "follow the right course" in managing Sino-American relations. Xi expressed hope that both countries can "prosper together."
He also highlighted that China's development does not contradict Trump's goal of "making America great again."
Xi added that the trade and economic teams of both countries have reached preliminary agreements on key issues of concern and achieved positive results. "History teaches us that China and the U.S. should be partners and friends," he stated.
After exchanging views, Trump and Xi continued the negotiations in a closed format. The American delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trade Representative Jamison Greer, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Latnik, Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles, and U.S. Ambassador to China David Purdue.
The Chinese side was represented by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, his deputy Ma Zhaoxu, Vice Premier of the State Council He Lifeng, Chief of Staff Cai Qi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, and Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission Zheng Shanjie.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the main topics of discussion were the development of bilateral relations, common interests, and the situation in Ukraine.
