In Bishkek, the construction of the National Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics is actively underway. This medical facility is being built on the basis of the City Clinical Emergency Hospital.

Academician Sabyrbek Jumabekov, who heads the Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, shared information about the project's progress with AKIpress.

The complex will be multifunctional and will cover an area of 34,500 square meters. Three billion soms have been allocated from the state budget for its construction, and work began in March 2025.

What has been done so far?

Currently, four out of the seven planned floors have been constructed. About 100 workers are involved in the construction. The facility is expected to be commissioned in 2026.

According to Sabyrbek Jumabekov, the center will be able to accept its first patients by the end of 2026.

“In March, the president signed a decree allocating funds for the construction of the National Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, and shortly after that, in early April, construction work began. In two to three months, four floors were built. We plan to complete the construction of all floors by the end of the year. This project is fully initiated and financed under the leadership of President Sadyr Nurgozhoevich, who has taken responsibility for its implementation,” he noted.

Why is such a center necessary?

Academician Jumabekov emphasized that with the increasing population in Bishkek and throughout the country, there is a growing need for modern traumatological and orthopedic services. About 1,000 specialists will work in this center, providing free and high-quality medical services.

The latest diagnostic methods, such as MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray, will be available here, as well as comprehensive postoperative rehabilitation. One of the main procedures will be arthroscopy—a minimally invasive method for diagnosing and treating joints, performed through small incisions using an endoscope.

“As you know, the emergency hospital next to which the new center is being built was opened in the early 1970s. At that time, the population of Bishkek was about 350,000 to 400,000 people. Now the city has nearly tripled in size, and the population of Kyrgyzstan has increased by 2.5 times,” he added.

Every year, the level of trauma increases by 5-10%, and this trend is not decreasing. This is due to the fact that the number of cars has increased 20 times compared to the 1970s and 1980s. Additionally, the number of children with musculoskeletal disorders remains high.

Currently, about 28,000 children with disabilities live in Kyrgyzstan, many of whom acquired their disabilities during the perinatal period. The demand for treatment is high, and existing hospitals are overloaded.

If earlier the average length of stay for traumatology patients was 59 days, in the last decade this period has been reduced to 10 days. This is a significant achievement, as if patients stayed in the hospital for 20, 40, or 60 days, the facilities would be overcrowded. Therefore, such a hospital is extremely necessary—the level of trauma is not decreasing, and we must create modern conditions for providing assistance to patients,” he concluded.
