According to preliminary census data, there are 5.1 million horses registered in Mongolia, which is 9.5% higher than last year's figure.
The National Statistical Committee of Mongolia has presented the preliminary results of the livestock census.
According to the data collected during the census, the total number of livestock in the country has reached 58.1 million heads, which is a record for Mongolia. This information was announced by the National Statistical Committee.
As of the end of 2025, the number of horses in the country is expected to be 5.1 million (an increase of 9.5%), cattle — 5.4 million (an increase of 7.2%), camels — 501.3 thousand (an increase of 4.3%), sheep — 23.9 million (a decrease of 2.6%), and goats — 23.2 million (an increase of 1.1%).
A list of the five aimags with the largest livestock populations has also been compiled. Leading is Khövsgöl Aimag with 5.3 million heads, followed by Övörkhangai Aimag — 5.1 million, Arkhangai Aimag — 4.4 million, Bayankhongor Aimag — 4.2 million, and Töv Aimag — 4.1 million.
The Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry reports that to meet the meat needs of the population of Mongolia, 14 million heads of livestock are required annually.
According to the National Statistical Office, at the end of 2024, there were 57.6 million heads of livestock in the country. Thus, an increase in livestock numbers of 0.8% is expected by 2025.
