At the World Economic Forum in Davos, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of "unhesitatingly using" existing mechanisms to protect Europe’s interests. He condemned the "harsh competition" from the United States and stated that the "law of the strongest" must not be allowed. This was reported by Euronews.

Macron noted that the goal of such competition is to "weaken and subordinate Europe." He urged the European Union to intensify innovation processes and attract private investments in key areas.

Starting his speech with the assertion that "the time for peace, stability, and predictability has come," the president elicited laughter from the audience. Nevertheless, he quickly shifted to real issues, stating that the world has entered an era of "instability and imbalance," where "conflicts have become the norm," and humanity is moving towards a "lawless world." Mentioning the international situation, he pointed out that by 2025, many conflicts have occurred, adding that "some of them have been resolved," hinting at U.S. President Donald Trump.

Macron concluded: "We prefer respect over bullies."

It is worth noting that earlier, Macron rejected Trump’s offer to participate in his initiative "Peace Council for Gaza," after which the American president threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne.

Trump, commenting on the situation, said that "he is not needed by anyone, as he will soon leave his post," adding about possible tariffs on French beverages.

In response to Trump’s tariff policy, the Élysée Palace noted that France does not consider tariffs an effective solution to global problems and economic imbalances. At the same time, the president's administration emphasized that the actions of the U.S. confirm Macron's long-standing position on the need for Europe's strategic autonomy.

Macron's speech in Davos coincided with an emergency EU summit scheduled for Thursday. On the same day, he proposed to meet Trump in Paris for dinner and an expanded G7 meeting.

Earlier, Trump agreed to meet in Davos during a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, continuing to emphasize the importance of Greenland for the security of the U.S. and the entire world.
