Trump canceled the introduction of tariffs for eight EU countries after reaching a 'framework' deal on Greenland

Trump noted that during productive negotiations, preliminary agreements were reached regarding Greenland, which could be beneficial for both the United States and all NATO countries.

“Based on the understandings reached, I have decided not to impose the tariffs that were planned for February 1,” he wrote in his message on the Truth Social platform.

These tariffs, announced just a few days before the start of the World Economic Forum, were to be set at 10% on goods from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and one eighth country, increasing to 25% by June.

The U.S. President insisted that the tariffs would remain in place until European countries supported the idea of Denmark selling Greenland to the United States.

The negotiations will involve Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other representatives who will report to Trump.

This statement was made shortly after his speech in Davos, where Trump again emphasized the importance of Greenland for U.S. national and global security, adding that NATO members might agree to U.S. control over the island, for which they would be “very grateful.”

At the same time, he ruled out the possibility of using force to establish control over Greenland.

Rutte, in his speech in Davos, called for “thoughtful diplomacy,” emphasizing the existing tensions within the alliance but expressing readiness to find solutions regarding Greenland.

Earlier this week, Trump published a personal message from Rutte, in which he expressed his intention to work on resolving this issue.

The threat of imposing tariffs prompted emergency meetings among EU countries scheduled for Thursday, where possible retaliatory measures were discussed. French President Emmanuel Macron proposed using the EU's anti-coercion instrument ACI, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the bloc's response would be “unyielding, united, and proportional.”

After his post about canceling the tariffs, Trump also told CNBC that there is now a “concept of a deal” that aligns with his interests regarding Greenland.
