Starting from February 1, 2024, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced the introduction of additional tariffs affecting the United Kingdom, Denmark, and other European countries. This measure is a response to the ongoing disputes surrounding Greenland, which Trump reported on his social media account on Truth Social.

According to him, the specified tariffs will remain in effect until a complete agreement on the acquisition of Greenland by the United States is reached.

A tariff of 10% will be imposed on goods shipped to the U.S. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. Starting June 1, this percentage will increase to 25%.

Trump also noted that countries like Russia and China are showing interest in Greenland, while Denmark is unable to handle this situation. He emphasized that only America, under his leadership, can successfully take an active stance on this issue. "At stake is the national security of both the U.S. and the entire world," he added.

The U.S. President criticized the actions of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, stating that they visit Greenland with "unknown intentions" and are playing "a very risky game."

Trump called for tough measures to quickly resolve this "potentially dangerous situation."

In response to the American leader's initiative, protests took place in Denmark and on the island.

It is worth noting that a bill has already been introduced in Congress regarding the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status." According to this document, the president is granted the right to take "any necessary actions" to achieve this goal.

Previously, Trump had expressed his intention to establish control over Greenland "one way or another." During his first term, he even proposed to buy the island, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence in the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of the Island, under which the U.S. committed to protect Greenland from potential threats.
