Against the backdrop of U.S. statements regarding rights to an Arctic island, three NATO countries — Germany, Sweden, and Norway — are sending their military personnel to Greenland. As reported by DW, participation in the reconnaissance mission is taking place at the invitation of Denmark.

The mission, which will take place from January 15 to 17, aims to explore military participation opportunities to support Denmark in ensuring security in this region, including maritime surveillance, the agency explained.

Germany will send 13 military personnel, who will fly to Greenland's capital Nuuk on an Airbus A400M transport aircraft on January 15. Norway will send two soldiers, as noted by the country's Minister of Defense, Tore Sandvik. Sweden will also send several officers, as reported by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The tabloid Bild emphasizes that this operation is organized by Denmark, indicating a lack of coordination with the U.S., which has recently begun to express territorial claims to the island again.

It is worth recalling that after the U.S. carried out a special operation and captured the President of Venezuela along with his wife, Donald Trump stated that the U.S. could take similar actions regarding other countries, including Greenland. This caused discontent in Denmark and many other countries, including China. Despite this, Trump did not back down — first, there was information that he instructed special operations commanders to develop a plan for a possible invasion of Greenland. Then, Republican Randy Fine introduced a bill in the U.S. Congress for the annexation of Greenland to the United States and granting it the status of an American state.
