At a briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed dissatisfaction that the United States might use China and Russia to justify its actions in the Arctic.

This statement was made in response to comments by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who during his visit to Iceland suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump unite NATO efforts to counter "threats" from China and Russia in the Arctic region.

Mao Ning noted that interests in the Arctic should be common to the entire international community and emphasized that China's actions in this region contribute to peace, stability, and sustainable development, as well as comply with international law.

She added that using the PRC and Russia as a pretext to advance one's own interests is unacceptable.

Additionally, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt previously claimed that the annexation of Greenland by the U.S. is necessary to contain Russia and China in the Arctic.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Financial Times, diplomats from Northern European countries refuted Trump's statements that Russian and Chinese ships are allegedly nearby Greenland. Two senior diplomats stated that there have been no signs of Russian and Chinese vessels or submarines in the area in recent years.

One informant for the publication noted: "It is absolutely untrue that there are Chinese and Russian vessels there. I have seen intelligence data, and there were no ships or submarines there."
