Temporarily. The USA has lifted sanctions on Hungary for the purchase of oil and gas from Russia.
Previously, Peter Szijjártó, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the United States granted the country an "unconditional and indefinite" exemption from restrictions concerning the companies "Rosneft" and "Lukoil".
During a meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Washington on November 7, President Donald Trump noted that he takes into account Hungary's lack of access to the sea, which complicates its ability to obtain energy resources from other regions.
Orbán also highlighted that Russian energy resources are "vital" for Hungary.
According to the information received, the U.S. has completely exempted Hungary from sanctions on energy resource supplies from Russia through the "Turkish Stream" and "Druzhba" pipelines.
“We have received a full exemption from restrictions for the 'Turkish Stream' and the 'Druzhba' pipeline,” Orbán stated.
Meanwhile, the European Union has approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which affects not only Russian companies and banks but also businesses from Central Asia, China, India, and Thailand.
Starting April 25, 2026, a complete ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas under short-term contracts will be implemented, and from January 1, 2027, for long-term contracts.
Additionally, sanctions against the "shadow fleet," which includes 117 tankers engaged in transporting Russian oil, are being expanded. Restrictions have been imposed on the companies "Rosneft" and "Gazprom Neft".
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also announced new restrictions against two leading Russian oil companies, stating that "Rosneft" and "Lukoil" "finance the Kremlin's military actions." Seven days prior, the United Kingdom imposed similar measures, freezing the assets of the companies and prohibiting new deals with them. The companies were given a month to wind down their operations.
