In his interview, Macron emphasized that European authorities have already notified China about a possible revision of cooperation. "I told them that if they do not respond, we Europeans will soon have to take tough measures and withdraw from cooperation. For example, we may impose tariffs on Chinese goods," he noted.

The President of France also pointed out the instability of China's trade surplus, adding that Beijing "imports very few European goods." He has already discussed potential countermeasures with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Macron believes that China poses a serious threat to the industrial and innovation market of Europe, especially in critically important sectors such as machine engineering and automotive manufacturing. The publication reports that the situation is exacerbated by the growth of Chinese exports and the increasing competitiveness of Chinese industry.

Furthermore, Macron noted that the protectionist policies of the United States create additional pressure on Europe by redirecting Chinese export flows to European markets. He described this as a matter of "life or death" for European industry.

"We have become a market for adaptation, and this is the worst-case scenario," added the French leader.

Recently, Macron returned from a three-day official visit to China, where, according to Bloomberg, he sought to secure increased investments and a revision of bilateral economic relations.

The trade deficit between France and China last year amounted to 47 billion euros. According to data provided by China, China's surplus in trade with the EU in the first half of 2025 rose to nearly 143 billion dollars, a record figure for the half-year.

Tensions in relations between Paris and Beijing have increased after the EU imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024. In response, China set minimum prices on French cognac, raising concerns among pork and dairy producers about potential similar measures.
