During the briefing, Guo Jiakun emphasized that China consistently opposes unilateral sanctions that contradict international law and have not received approval from the UN Security Council. He also noted that the potential use of frozen Russian assets could negatively impact China's trust in the investment climate in EU countries.

Guo Jiakun added that Beijing insists on the necessity of creating a constructive atmosphere for dialogue and negotiations, involving all interested parties. He highlighted the importance of a political resolution to the situation in Ukraine as a main priority.

Recall that earlier, on December 12, the Council of the European Union made a decision to indefinitely freeze Russia's sovereign assets. The European Commission hopes to gain the consent of member states for the expropriation of about €210 billion of Russian assets, of which €185 billion are held in the Euroclear depository in Belgium, with the aim of subsequently lending to Ukraine at the EU summit scheduled for December 18-19.
