On December 31, The Wall Street Journal reported that, according to CIA findings, Ukrainian drones were likely targeting a military facility in the same area, but not Putin's residence. American intelligence agencies have the capabilities to track Russian airspace and monitor strikes on its territory using satellites and radar systems.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe informed U.S. President Donald Trump about the obtained data. In response, Trump posted a link on his social media to a New York Post article suggesting that Ukraine was unlikely to have carried out an attack on Putin's residence. He accompanied the post with the headline "Putin's loud claims of 'attack' suggest that it is Russia that is disrupting peace."

The CIA declined to comment on this information.

Moscow had previously claimed that 91 Ukrainian drones attempted to attack Putin's residence. According to the Kremlin, this was reported by the Russian president to Trump during a phone call on December 29. Trump, in turn, expressed dissatisfaction, stating that he was "very angry" and that "this is not the right time for such things."

The Ukrainian side denied the accusations of attempting to attack Putin's residence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that the Armed Forces of the country strike exclusively at "legitimate military targets on Russian territory in response to Russian strikes on Ukraine."
