Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced the complete closure of airspace over Venezuela.
In his social media platform Truth Social, he noted: “All airlines, pilots, drug traffickers, and human traffickers should know that the airspace over Venezuela and its surroundings is closed. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The Trump administration accuses the Venezuelan leadership of insufficient efforts in combating drug trafficking. Since September 2025, the U.S. has begun launching missile strikes against Venezuelan vessels suspected of transporting drugs.
As part of the anti-drug campaign, Trump has deployed a significant number of troops to the shores of Venezuela. This has sparked discussions about the possibility of a ground operation against Venezuela, one of the goals of which could be the overthrow of President Nicolás Maduro.
According to sources from The New York Times, during unofficial negotiations with U.S. representatives, Maduro expressed his willingness to resign in the next two to three years; however, Washington did not support this plan.
