As reported by NBC News, Trump shared his thoughts on the matter on Friday, January 16, during a roundtable discussion focused on healthcare in rural areas. During the discussion on tariff policy, he mentioned that tariffs could be applied in the context of Greenland.

The President stated: "If countries refuse to support our plan for Greenland, I can impose tariffs against them, as this island is important for our national security." However, he did not specify which countries and tariffs he was referring to.

Denmark, which controls Greenland, previously rejected Trump's proposals to sell the island to the U.S. In recent days, military units from several European countries, allies of America, have arrived in Greenland, further highlighting the growing tension around the issue.

On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland held talks in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance, but the U.S. position on the transfer of Greenland remained unchanged. As a result, some European states announced their intention to send troops to the island.

According to media reports, Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt could not hold back tears during an interview after the meeting at the White House. Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted that Trump "wants to conquer Greenland" and rejected the American president's claims that without U.S. control on the island "there will be Chinese destroyers and submarines everywhere."
