Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced the introduction of 10% tariffs on goods from eight European countries that sent their troops to Greenland. These measures will take effect on February 1, and by June, the tariff rate will increase to 25%.
The list of countries subject to the tariffs includes Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, which are participating in military exercises organized by Denmark. President Trump stated that the tariffs will be lifted as soon as a deal for the "complete purchase of Greenland" is reached.
For many years, we have provided financial support to Denmark and other European Union countries without demanding any tariffs or compensation from them. Now, after all this time, it is time for Denmark to respond with goodwill — after all, we are talking about world peace! China and Russia are showing interest in Greenland, and Denmark is unable to stop this. At the moment, they have only two dog sled teams for protection, one of which was acquired very recently.
Only the United States under Donald Trump's leadership can successfully play this game! This sacred piece of land will remain protected, especially considering that the national security of not only the U.S. but the entire world is at stake.
Moreover, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland recently went to Greenland with unknown intentions. This creates serious risks for the security and survival of our world. These countries, playing dangerous games, have subjected our planet to an unacceptable and unstable level of threat. Therefore, it is important to take decisive steps to protect global security and to resolve this potentially dangerous situation quickly. Starting February 1, 2026, a 10% tariff will be imposed on all goods from the specified countries, which will increase to 25% on June 1, 2026. These tariffs will remain in effect until an agreement on the complete purchase of Greenland is reached, which the United States has been trying to acquire for over 150 years. Many presidents have made similar requests, and there were good reasons for that, but Denmark has always refused.
Now, considering modern weapon systems and the Iron Dome, the need to acquire territory becomes particularly relevant. Currently, hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on security programs related to the "Dome," including potential protection for Canada. This complex and effective system can function best only if it includes this territory, given its geographical features. The United States is ready for immediate negotiations with Denmark or any of the aforementioned countries that have put themselves in danger, despite all the assistance we have provided them over the years. Thank you for your attention!
Donald J. Trump,
President of the United States of America
At the beginning of the year, Trump once again intensified his claims on Greenland, demanding that the island be transferred to the U.S. and threatening military action if a deal is not made. These statements have provoked a negative reaction from both the local population and politicians in Denmark.
Trump claims that Greenland is necessary for the U.S. to ensure security.
