According to local media, the ferry M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 was on a route from Zamboanga (Mindanao) to the island of Holo, located in the Sulu archipelago. The vessel sank in open waters near the island of Pilas, which belongs to the municipality of Hadji Muhtamad.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, there were 332 passengers and 27 crew members on board. So far, 316 people have been rescued, but 43 individuals are still considered missing. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.

It is believed that a technical malfunction may have led to the incident. An investigation is underway to determine all the circumstances surrounding the event.

The Philippines has previously faced numerous serious ferry incidents. This year, a fire occurred on a ferry operating between Zamboanga and the province of Sulu, claiming the lives of more than 30 people.
