Singapore launches national space agency

Singapore has announced the establishment of the National Space Agency (NSAS) aimed at strengthening its position in the global space market, which is projected to grow to $1.8 trillion by 2035, reports Kazinform, citing SCMP.

This was announced by Minister of Energy and Science Tan See Leng at the first-ever space summit.

NSAS will evolve from the existing Office for Space Technology and Industry, established in 2013, consolidating all satellite, research, and business interaction programs. Since 2022, Singapore has already invested over 200 million Singapore dollars in space R&D, and the launch of the new agency is expected to accelerate the commercialization of these investments.

"Singapore represents an ideal base for space companies in the Asia-Pacific region," noted Tan See Leng, emphasizing the country's developed financial, logistical, and technological infrastructure. He also added that an important aspect is workforce development, and the authorities plan to increase the number of local specialists to support the industry and create high-paying jobs.

Currently, the government, together with ST Engineering, operates three Earth observation satellites; however, there are plans for further expansion of the orbital grouping. Additionally, the authorities intend to create an interagency center for processing satellite and geospatial data, which will be used in port logistics, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and ensuring food security.

The equatorial location of Singapore is seen as a strategic advantage for developing satellite systems that will cater to both national and regional needs.

"Our geographical position allows us to work more actively in the equatorial belt," noted the minister.

The initiative has received support from business representatives and industry experts.

"This decision demonstrates Singapore's readiness to take a more active role in the global space ecosystem," stated Cedric Ng from Space Faculty, emphasizing the need for long-term investments in education and training new engineers. At LeoLabs, it was noted that the creation of NSAS confirms that Singapore is reaching the level of countries that already have their own space agencies.
