India has introduced new customs rules for tourists and residents of the country

The Indian authorities have implemented updated customs rules regarding the duty-free import of personal belongings for tourists and citizens of the country, reports RIA Novosti. According to the new legislative initiative, travelers arriving in India on a tourist visa will be able to bring in personal belongings worth up to 25,000 rupees (276 dollars), while foreigners holding other types of visas can import goods duty-free worth no more than 75,000 rupees (830 dollars). This same limit applies to Indian citizens and tourists of Indian origin.

As clarified by the Indian news agency PTI, the new rules increase the previous limits, which were 15,000 rupees for tourists and 50,000 rupees for residents of the country. However, the legislation does not specify mechanisms for assessing personal belongings or potential consequences for exceeding the established limits.

Additionally, the new rules impose restrictions on the weight of imported gold and platinum items: women are allowed to bring in up to 40 grams duty-free, while men can bring in up to 20 grams.

Furthermore, the new legislation includes provisions for the duty-free import of one laptop and pets.

The Ministry of Finance of India emphasized that the new rules are the result of a review and consolidation of 35 previously existing circulars.

“The updated system aims to increase duty-free import limits, reduce waiting times, implement digital and simplified processes, and streamline procedures to enhance passenger convenience. It will also help strengthen India's status as a country open to international communication and welcoming to tourists, thanks to the uniform application of rules in customs authorities,” the ministry noted.
