The study analyzed data from 185 countries, covering 36 types of cancer, and assessed the impact of 30 preventable risk factors, including:
- tobacco and alcohol consumption;
- overweight;
- low levels of physical activity;
- environmental pollution and ultraviolet exposure.
Key Causes of Morbidity
Smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer, accounting for 15% of all new cases. In second place are infectious diseases, causing 10% of new diagnoses, while alcohol consumption ranks third with 3% of cases.- Smoking and air pollution are the main factors contributing to lung cancer, Helicobacter pylori infection is linked to stomach cancer, and the human papillomavirus is associated with cervical cancer.
The study also revealed differences in morbidity between men and women: 45% of new cancer cases among men are linked to preventable factors, while the figure for women is 30%.
The authors of the study emphasize that the development of effective prevention strategies should take local conditions into account and include control over the sale of tobacco and alcohol, vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B, improvement of air quality, and the creation of conditions for healthy eating and physical activity.
