Tajikistan's national debt decreased by $100 million over the past year

Currently, out of the total national debt of $3 billion, $2.6 billion (87%) is external debt, while $500 million (13%) constitutes domestic obligations.

For comparison, as of January 1, 2025, Tajikistan's total national debt was at $3.6 billion, which accounted for 25.2% of GDP. Of this amount, $3.2 billion (89%) was related to external debts, and $400 million (11%) was domestic.

During his speech, the minister also reported that last year, 31 agreements were signed with various ministries and agencies aimed at implementing 25 state investment projects with a total cost of $619 million.

For servicing the external debt in 2025, $504.6 million was allocated, of which $416.3 million went to repay the principal debt, and $88.3 million was for interest payments.

Kahhorzoda noted that no deviations from the planned schedules for servicing debts to international financial institutions and individual states were recorded.

To date, the Export-Import Bank of China remains the main external creditor of Tajikistan, and the debt to it has gradually decreased to nearly $700 million.

Moreover, the republic has significant obligations to the World Bank (about $380 million), the Asian Development Bank (over $250 million), the Islamic Development Bank (more than $250 million), the International Monetary Fund ($195 million), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ($165 million).
