According to the company's statement, only those parents who have activated the "parental control" feature through the "Family Center" section in the settings will receive such notifications. For users under 16 years old with parental control enabled, changing or disabling important account features is only possible with parental consent. Additionally, with the teenager's consent, parents will be able to monitor their activity time, set limits, and manage certain settings. If the system detects that a teenager frequently searches for information about suicide or self-harm, a message will be sent to the parents.
The new feature will initially be tested in the USA, UK, Australia, and Canada, with potential expansion to other countries later.
This decision has become relevant after discussions about introducing restrictions for teenagers on social media in various countries. For example, in Australia, the use of such platforms by children under 16 is already prohibited. The UK is also considering similar age restrictions, while Greece and Slovenia are exploring the possibility of implementing such measures. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has also announced plans to prepare a ban on access to social media for children under 16.
