The film 'One Battle After Another' has won the Oscar for Best Picture, marking the first triumph for renowned director Paul Thomas Anderson, according to Bloomberg.
This film features impressive performances from actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, the latter of whom received the award for Best Supporting Actor.
Paul Thomas Anderson was also recognized for Best Directing and Best Adapted Screenplay, explaining that he wrote this film as an apology to children for the current state of affairs in the world.
At the recent Oscar ceremony, 'One Battle After Another' was awarded Best Picture, granting Paul Thomas Anderson the long-awaited victory.
Produced by Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., the film tells the story of a revolutionary who, facing alcoholism, tries to save his daughter from a former enemy. This film was considered a favorite among experts and bookmakers predicting the Oscar results.
Leonardo DiCaprio played a retired anarchist who is passionate about marijuana, while Sean Penn portrayed an army officer with racist views. At the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Penn received the award for his outstanding role.
Previously, Paul Thomas Anderson directed such well-known films as 'There Will Be Blood' (2007) and 'Boogie Nights' (1997). Despite having 11 previous Oscar nominations, this victory was his first. He was also awarded for directing and writing the screenplay for 'One Battle After Another', which features scenes depicting the guarding of immigrants.
“I made this film for my children, to apologize for the mess we’ve left in this world,” Anderson noted upon receiving the award for the screenplay. “I hope they will be the generation that brings back common sense and decency.”
The Oscar ceremony provided Hollywood with the opportunity to showcase its best achievements to a wide audience, including outstanding films, stars, and talented directors.
The film 'The Sinners', also produced by Warner Bros., received a record 16 nominations before the ceremony, marking a historic achievement for the Oscars. Director Ryan Coogler presented a unique interpretation of the horror genre with musical elements and a storyline addressing racism in 1930s Mississippi. Michael B. Jordan was recognized for Best Actor for his portrayal of twins in this film.
Coogler, who gained recognition for the independent film 'Fruitvale Station', also directed box office hits like 'Creed' and 'Black Panther'. At this ceremony, he was awarded for Best Original Screenplay. Otem Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win the award for Best Cinematography for 'The Sinners', which also won for Best Score.
Jessie Buckley was recognized as Best Actress for her role as William Shakespeare's wife in the film 'Hamnet' from Focus Features.
The Netflix musical 'Demon Hunters' (K-Pop) won the award for Best Animated Feature. This project about a female vocal group battling supernatural beings became the most popular film on the platform. Its success contributed to its theatrical release. The song "Golden" from this musical was also recognized as Best Original Song.
Emmy Madigan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys in the horror film 'Weapon' from Warner Bros. This is her first win, despite a previous nomination for the film 'Twice in a Lifetime' in 1985.
The ceremony began with a video featuring host Conan O'Brien, who was dressed as Madigan's character, pursued in scenes from several nominated films.
In his opening, O'Brien humorously mentioned artificial intelligence, stating that it is an honor for him to be the last person to host this ceremony. He also joked about Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, noting that it was his first visit to the theater.
In the segment "In Memoriam," dedicated to filmmakers who passed away last year, heartfelt words were shared about actors and directors such as Rob Reiner and Robert Redford.
The event was once again broadcast via ABC, owned by Walt Disney Co., as well as on the streaming service Hulu.
Given the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the ceremony was held with heightened security measures, including a police buffer zone within a 1.5 km radius around the theater. On Sunday, only a few demonstrators protesting against the fighting in Gaza were outside this perimeter.
Political themes were also reflected in the show. Actor Javier Bardem expressed support for Palestinian freedom while presenting the award for Best International Feature to the Norwegian film 'Sentimental Value'.
Host Jimmy Kimmel, while presenting awards for documentaries, noted that there are countries where freedom of speech is not supported but did not name them, limiting his remarks to North Korea and CBS.
This year, the ceremony underwent changes: the Academy now requires members to watch all nominated films before voting. A new award for achievements in casting was presented for the first time, which was awarded to Cassandra Kulukundis for 'One Battle After Another'.
