Mongolia expects to receive a European loan of $30 million for the modernization of the power grid

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) may provide Mongolia with a loan of up to $30 million (€25.8 million) for the modernization of the power transmission infrastructure in the southern part of the country, which will allow for the integration of both existing and new renewable energy capacities.

As part of this project, it is planned to use the loan funds to construct a 220 kV power transmission line from Sainshand to Tsagaan Suvarga, spanning 214 kilometers (132 miles), as well as to expand the existing Tsagaan Suvarga substation with a voltage of 220/22 kV. The total investment cost for this project will be approximately $43.6 million.

Additionally, the project will contribute to the development of human resources by supporting the National Power Transmission Company in establishing a National Center of Excellence in Renewable Energy in Mongolia. This center will focus on training and developing local specialists to better meet labor market demands, as stated in the official announcement.

Project financing will be carried out by the government of Mongolia through the Ministry of Energy, and the future operator will be the National Power Transmission Network.
