In its official statement, the ADB specified that the creation of facilities with a capacity of 115 megawatts of solar panels and energy storage systems using batteries with a capacity of 65 megawatts/237 megawatt-hours is planned, which will be installed in the Western and Eastern energy systems of Mongolia.

This will become one of the largest initiatives for renewable energy procurement in the country and the first auction dedicated to solar energy and storage systems. The project aims to improve the reliability of power grids, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and electricity imports, as well as provide affordable and clean energy for remote areas, added the ADB.

Shannon Cowlin, the ADB's representative in Mongolia, noted: “We are proud to support Mongolia in its pursuit of clean energy through innovative solutions in renewable sources and energy storage. This project will contribute to enhancing energy security by enabling deeper integration of renewable sources and creating opportunities for greater investments in solar energy in the future.”

The project is expected to improve the stability of two isolated power systems by using batteries to smooth peak consumption, regulate frequency, and balance the grid, allowing for more solar energy to be integrated into the network. The tender will be conducted through an open and transparent competition to attract private investments and support Mongolia's renewable energy and climate change goals.

This project is the result of collaboration between the ADB and the Ministry of Energy of Mongolia and supports Mongolia's State Energy Policy for 2015–2030, as well as the government's new strategies for reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security.
