In 2024, 1,020 titles of books will be published in Kyrgyzstan, with a total circulation of 1,617 thousand copies, reports the National Statistical Committee on the occasion of Information and Printing Day.

Of the total number of published books, more than 58% will be in the Kyrgyz language.

It is worth noting that the development of the publishing industry in Kyrgyzstan began in the mid-1920s, when the process of forming national writing and the first printed publications in Kyrgyz was completed in the republic. Although fiction and books in the Kyrgyz language were published even before the establishment of the national publishing house, this mainly occurred outside the republic.

The first batch of books, consisting of eight titles, was printed in 1925 at the Pishpek printing house. In the same year, 30 books were published in cities such as Moscow, Tashkent, and Pishpek, with a total circulation of 100 thousand copies.

In 1926, at the first meeting of the Kyrgyz State Administration for Printing Affairs, the publishing house "Kyrgyzmambas" (or "Kirgizdat") was established. In its first year of operation, 26 titles of books were published with a total circulation of about 66 thousand copies.

In the 1930s, publishing in the country received a significant boost for development due to improvements in the production and technical base.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the majority of publishing activities were carried out by such publishing houses as "Kyrgyzstan," "Mektep," "Ilim," and "Adabiyat."
