Science in the Kyrgyz Republic: numbers and facts

The Day of Science in Kyrgyzstan, celebrated annually in November, was established by a Resolution of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic back in 2002.

The history of science in Kyrgyzstan dates back to 1943, when the Kyrgyz branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences was created under wartime conditions. In December 1954, based on this branch, the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR was established, employing 203 researchers, of whom 12 held doctoral degrees and 83 held candidate degrees.

In 1993, the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic was transformed into the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan, gaining the status of the main state scientific institution.

As of 2024, the Academy employed 1,315 people, including 129 doctors and 256 candidates of sciences. Notably, women make up about 52% of the total staff.

In 2024, the state budget expenditures for scientific research and development amounted to 893 million soms, which is 50% more compared to 2020.

There were 68 scientific organizations operating in the republic, of which 36% belonged to the higher education sector, and 31% to the academic sector.

Among the scientific and technical works carried out in 2024, 55% were produced by organizations in the academic sector.

More than 8,000 people were engaged in scientific research and development, including employees of higher educational institutions.

Of the total number of specialists employed in the scientific field, about 80% are researchers, of whom nearly 38% hold academic degrees. Women account for 62% of the total number of researchers.

For specialists in various sectors of the country's economy, there are postgraduate and doctoral programs that help enhance the level of education and qualifications.

In 2024, the number of postgraduate students was 2,400, of which 24% studied in the field of medicine, 16% in pedagogy, 13% in law, and 8% in economics. The number of doctoral students reached 623. More than 60% of postgraduate students and about 60% of doctoral students are women.
