The foundations of science in the country were laid in 1943 with the establishment of a branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In December 1954, the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR was founded on its basis. At that time, it employed 203 researchers, including 12 doctors and 83 candidates of sciences. In 1993, the Academy received the status of the National Academy of Sciences.
As of 2024, 1,315 specialists are engaged in scientific activities in Kyrgyzstan, among whom are 129 doctors and 256 candidates of sciences. Interestingly, women make up 52% of the total number of researchers.
In 2022, the state budget expenditures on scientific research and development amounted to 893 million soms, which is 50% more compared to 2020. There are 68 scientific organizations operating in the country, most of which are higher education institutions and academic sector entities.

In total, more than 8,000 specialists are involved in scientific research and development, including university faculty. Approximately 80% of them are researchers, and nearly 38% hold academic degrees.
In 2024, there are 2,400 people studying in graduate school, with the highest number of students in the fields of medicine, education, economics, and law. Women make up over 60% of graduate and doctoral students.
Throughout the year, 591 graduate students completed their programs, with the largest number of graduates coming from the fields of education, medicine, law, and history.
