According to a study published by BBC News, "mouth-to-mouth" kisses have existed for over 21 million years.

Most likely, this way of expressing affection was characteristic of the ancestors of both humans and great apes, including Neanderthals. This means that representatives of Homo sapiens could have exchanged kisses with Neanderthals.

Researchers became interested in this topic because kisses represent a unique evolutionary puzzle: they provide no obvious advantages for survival or reproduction, yet they are found in both human societies and the animal kingdom.
