Old photographs are kept in the family archive of Olga Afanasyeva, a resident of Kara-Balta.

In one of the color photographs taken in 1973, you can see a New Year's slogan at the entrance to the Lenin Cultural House: "All roads and orbits are open for you."

Olga Vladimirovna recalls that at that time the Soviet Union was actively developing space technologies, and cosmonauts often returned for the holiday. The words "rocket," "orbit," and "satellite" were on everyone's lips, and many boys from her 3-A class dreamed of becoming cosmonauts.

According to the city resident, the main New Year tree was set up not in the square, but inside the Lenin Cultural House, on the second floor, in front of the entrance to the cinema hall. Around the live, fragrant tree, round dances were held with Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. "New Year performances and concerts were held in the cinema hall. The morning performances lasted a whole week, and several events took place daily. They gathered children from the employees of the city's enterprises, which amounted to about 12-15 thousand schoolchildren. Since the Cultural House could accommodate no more than 300 people at a time, 4-5 performances were organized each day so that every child could receive a sweet gift funded by the city. None of the officials considered this their achievement; handing out gifts to 10-15 thousand schoolchildren was the norm. Separate New Year morning performances were also held in the city's schools," she added.
